ExxonMobil to Consolidate Houston Offices at New Campus Near The Woodlands
Houston’s worst kept commercial real estate secret was officially announced today as ExxonMobil acknowledged development of a new office campus in north Houston to consolidate employees currently working in a variety of locations in the Houston area. The previously rumored campus just south of The Woodlands surfaced back in early 2010, but up until today’s announcement ExxonMobil had declined to make any public comments on the project.
About 8,000 ExxonMobile Houston-area employees will relocate to the new campus just south of The Woodlands from multiple Houston area office buildings including their downtown office tower and multiple buildings in the Greenspoint submarket. ExxonMobil’s Irving corporate headquarters is not part of the consolidation and an additional 2,500 employees in the ExxonMobil’s Fairfax, Va. offices could ultimately be relocated to Houston.
Five local Exxon companies will relocate to the new campus:
- Exxon Mobil Exploration Co. and Exxon Mobil Development Co. will leave approximately 2.2 million square feet of owned and leased space in the Greenspoint area;
- Exxon Mobil Gas and Power Marketing Co. and Exxon Mobil Production Co. will vacate a 1.1 million-square-foot, company-owned building at 800 Bell St. in downtown Houston;
- Exxon Mobil Chemical Co. will leave leased space at 13501 Katy Freeway;
- Exxon Mobil Upstream Research Co. will move out of 3120 Buffalo Speedway.
The new development will contain multiple low-rise office buildings, a laboratory, conference and training centers and facilities such as child care, a wellness center and other employee amenities. Detail were not released but sources have indicated the campus will contain some 20 buildings with 3 million square feet of office space.

ExxonMobil announced today the development of a new office campus in north Houston for employees currently working in a variety of locations in the Houston area.
The complex will be located on a 385-acre wooded site on company-owned land near the intersection of I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road. It will contain multiple low-rise office buildings, a laboratory, conference and training centers and facilities such as child care, a wellness center and other employee amenities.

It is expected that most employees working in the corporation’s Houston Upstream head office activities, along with ExxonMobil Chemical Company and various staff support services, will be based at the campus.
Employees will move in phases as the buildings are constructed, beginning early 2014. Full occupancy for Houston-based employees is expected by 2015.
Construction and ongoing operations will create thousands of jobs, substantial state and local taxes and significant benefits to the Texas and Houston-area economy.
The decision to proceed with the campus resulted from a study of the corporation’s office requirements in the United States. Further study will determine whether any other U.S. office locations will be located at the campus in the future.
